Ângela Nieto is a Full Professor at Instituto de Neurociencias, CSIC-UMH, Alicante. She is now the President of the International Society for Developmental Biology, the Spanish Scientific Delegate for the European Molecular Biology laboratory (EMBL) and the European Molecular Biology Conference (EMBC) and Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), among many other appointments. Ângela Nieto’s main research interests have been the study of cell behaviour in development and disease focussing on cell movements. She has contributed extensively towards the understanding of epithelial to mesenchymal transitions (EMTs) an essential process for the normal development of numerous tissues and organs. Moreover, Ângela Nieto’s team has also found that pathological activation of the EMT in the adult is involved in several prominent pathologies including cancer and fibrosis.
