Lino Ferreira heads the “Biomaterials and Stem Cell-Based Therapeutic” research group at the Centre for Neuroscience and Cell Biology of the University of Coimbra. His laboratory has developed methodologies to efficiently differentiate human pluripotent stem cells into vascular cells (smooth muscle and endothelial cells). His group uses stem cell-based therapy to treat chronic diabetic wounds, have employed 3D scaffolds for stem cell differentiation and transplantation, and have developed platforms to modulate exogenous and endogenous stem cell niches. They are also developing nanomaterials that efficiently release small molecules or non-coding RNA (miRNAs) to manipulate stem cells or their progenies. Lino Ferreira’s laboratory has started a biomaterials spin-off (Matera) with headquarters at Biocant (Cantanhede). They have licensed 5 patents in the last 5 years and Lino Ferreira was awarded an ERC grant in 2012.
