Sylvie Rétaux - Short Bio

Sylvie Rétaux is a team leader at Paris-Saclay Institute of Neurosciences. Using an evolutionary developmental biology approach, she aims to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms which govern the unity (homology) and the differences (diversification) present in the forebrains of various vertebrates. To this end, her lab uses an original animal model: the blind cavefish Astyanax mexicanus, which they consider a “natural mutant”. During its adaptation to life in total and permanent darkness, this fish lost its eyes and its pigmentation.
